It was Christmas 2003. With the arrival of my in-laws, the dispute festive season was in full swing. Parti hidden in our small study, closed the door, and put a piece of foolscap in front of old. I have a stack of these sheets of paper very close to my father. I looked at the blue-lined paper, courage meeting, wrote the not-so-immortal line: "~ Tommy was on vacation with his parents '. I would like to start a new story to the little Louise, my youngest daughter. I scribbled down a page. The exchange of the house, oh yes! an exchange house that went wrong. Tommy and his mom and dad traded his home unusual for a castle in France.

Now I know that a particular castle in France very well, so does a model that I' ll it. But to protect the privacy of my friends who own it, I' ll put it out of Toulouse, where he isn' t. Law, the paper became transparent and looking through it I could see roads lined with plane and hear crickets chirping, as Tommy expanded over the small French car that his father had just bought, approaching € | € Whereâ | Romolue. I don t ™ € know where that name came from, but French friends do not ask where it really is (no), especially when I heard it in all its glory Romolue les Bains Romains St Etienne-Just. She makes others laugh, because it sounds like a name that someone would become, as under the Littlehampton Hill. I see now that there' sa high wall by the roadside, some ornate metal doors for a long journey, a bar where they ask the way and a friendly bartender, the Tour de France on TV, watch -it' must be in July for that!

Figures it would be important players start to come: the priest and the wrinkled old retainer in the castle, but I still do not have a good story. For several years I have thought of writing a story about a trip back in time to when the castle that I know I was young and mix with the people there. So I know what I want, but I do not know how to reach it. You see, there' s an engraving on the wall of the palace, which shows the gardens must have been three or four years ago. The first time I saw this conditioning, I knew I wanted to write a history of exploring the world of 1599, starting the life and thoughts of people in the garden, which are shown parading in long dresses and pants with ruffles around the bushes recording.

I re-read what I had written, crossing stuff out, pushing bits, scribble in the margins. Then, as can happen, I picked up where I had just stopped and scribbled for an hour or more. Magic around the gates of the palace, the magic around the etching, a mystery to be explored and so I had the vehicle I wanted, the recording itself, of course! And when, in the next chapter Tommy really comes in 1599 "|. he had his phone with him. Course. As a part of my daughter' s life, the phone would be another important character in history. But what story?

I read as much as I had gone to Louisa that night. "~ Go on, go on, ' he was whispering. I know it may have been the same if I had been reading the telephone directory, because children are always going to love what the father (or mother) has written. But anyway she liked and was very disappointed when I stopped.

"~ Go ON! <br> ' "~ But i can t ™ €, ' I said. "~ There isn t ™ € anymore. You' re going to have to wait until Iâ ™ € ve written it.a <br>'"~ Tell me what' s going to happen, ' and she gave me a mischievous grin, knowing that I wouldn' t. What she did not know what -and I wouldnâ ™ € t tell her "" was that I still do not know. Every time I read a little more of the story was the same. "~ Go ON! ' And so, in fact, went until I discovered that I had written fifty pages and had simply copied and was unstoppable. That's how I came to write a book, now with three books, without ever having the intention when I started!
