While there are tons of activities and opportunities for disabled people, my multiple disabilities prevent me from participating in most of them.
I do not go out with my friends regularly. What to do in an hour would take me much longer. There was little time for fun during my school years. Yes, I was invited, but I was only when I had assignments with deadlines. Unfortunately, this was not often. In high school, I made some really genuine. Although I finished college, school friends are still there for me. They understand my shortcomings. They have not forgotten me. They never ignore me or make me feel different. I'm not as bright as they are, but they always include me in your group. They ask! They give me the option to say no. And they don t ™ € guess I will not attend.
When I started school, the children ignored me. It happened during the public school too, but I was younger and he does not bother me much. As I grew older, I became more aware of it. Each time I felt alone. For a normal teenager, high school can be traumatic. You can imagine how it was for me? Well, the isolation became worse. Eventually, one of my teachers called my mother and said: "We seem to be having a problem with social Azeem."My mother was caught by surprise because she knew I was very sociable, especially when I am treated with respect and dignity.
"A social problem? "my mother asked in disbelief. "that's very strange."<br> Mrs. Carson, my teacher of special needs, went on to explain in isolation from other students, she suspected it was due to a lack of knowledge. "What do we do? "she asked.
"I suggest you talk with students and explain the medical condition. If you do not feel comfortable doing that, I would be most happy to talk with them, "my mother said.
The date was agreed and my mother, being a teacher herself, gave a very effective and simple presentation. She educated the children on the trachea. She told them that was the only thing that keeps me alive. The child gasped when I heard that. They never realized my problems began at birth and that my brain was damaged to the point where I could not breathe.
"This equipment here, "my mother said, referring to the suction kit, "OEIS used to extract mucus Azeem's lungs. It may seem like a blue box for you, but it is one of their lifelines. He has to take with him wherever he goes. When children make fun of him, he avoids using the kit suction and has difficulty breathing. Do you prefer if he stops breathing? " she asked the class.
All shook their heads no, too stunned to respond.
"Azeem not want your sympathy. He wants his friends. He wants to be accepted for who he is. I want all of you realize that any one of you can be hit by a car today and become disabled. I would like to be ignored and isolated? It is always best to be kind and lend a hand. Remember, Azeem is a person. He has feelings. He is a teenager, just like you. He likes to go out and shoot the breeze in the same way you do. If you try to talk to him, you will find that he enjoys playing and has a great sense of humor. All he wants is to be treated with respect."<br> My mother told me she would always remember a comment made during a student's questions and answers. "Mrs. Kayum, you taught me a lot today. I was one who felt Azeem could not mix. I'm glad you came in."That, my mother said, made it all worthwhile.
Being a teenager, I was self-conscious and chose not to go to school that morning. Based on the reaction of the students, I knew some of them felt guilty for ignoring me. Some to become very good friends and always looked after me. A little education goes a long way.
