The medical term known as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have surfaced after the Vietnam conflict. The soldiers returned home mentally scarred by the ravages of war. Lives were changed forever. PTSD is nothing new, and certainly has been around since man began to take its first battle, but has only recently been recognized as a distinct problem.

Bedlam South is an interesting novel that takes a look at the American Civil War as seen through the eyes of two Confederate soldiers, brothers, and a doctor working with the mentally insane. But these patients are insane or merely pawns of The Game of war?

I'm always curious about romances with two authors, sometimes they work, sometimes they don' t. I for one could not conceive of writing a novel with someone else, my ego is too large, and a novel is an intensely personal thing. A little research reveals that these two authors have been friends for many years. Both are new to the business of creation, but one of them may have done some guidance from his older brother. Yes, Mark John Grisham is Grisham' s brother. Going further, we find that Mark is a bit of a fan of history, particularly the Civil War era, while David is interested in psychology and mental health for many years.

Interestingly, these two authors have managed to maintain a consistent voice and style all Bedlam South, but of course you can see which inspired a particular sub plot.

Two brothers, Billy experienced battle, and his younger brother Zeke stand shoulder to shoulder on the battlefield fighting for the Confederate Army. Divided into a devastating battle with the forces of the North spend the rest of the war not knowing if the other is alive, but somehow trying to force the horrors of war and the potential benefits of your mind.

Dr. Joseph Bryarly however, is running a mental asylum in England, the call to arms comes and reluctantly returns to America to lead the Wingate Asylum in Richmond, Virginia, a facility for the mentally insane and war criminals .

Today, the concept of this place is disgusting, but in the 1860' s this was not an unusual arrangement, and certainly Russia made things very similar to the 1970th's. The long-term therapy must be very loosely interpreted as using it in the context of "~ helping patients '.

The mid-1800A's seen some very unique treatments, most of whom questioned the sanity of the staff rather than patients. Dr. Bryarly is not without his own demons, and that the war progresses, it becomes increasingly disconnected with reality, seeking solace in drink and drugs. The horrors of the past, compared with the horrors of this seem to master it. Can he survive? Or perhaps more importantly he has the will to survive?

Liked Bedlam South, is well written and well researched, but still have some doubts about the effectiveness of having co-authors. The book is really two separate stories for the most part the reader must wait until the final pages to understand how they relate. I had the two stories intertwined in a meaningful way in the first part of the book, he would have made for a better end result.

I still liked it, and if you have someone on your gift list for Christmas who likes historical novels of the Civil War era, this is a must have. You can order your copy of the site of the web authors.
