Larry Gorton was right.
Unfortunately, having correctly predicted what he would didn' t listen to it easier.
I needed to make the trip. Find foreclosure. Shooting scenes. Give the man a proper burial back in Texas. All this is true. Part of me felt relieved that at least death would have ended their addictions time, freed of its major flaws, and threw the loneliness he' d been involved in MOMA from's death.
I remembered again that he hadnâ ™ € t was always the man I' d spoken on the phone two years ago. Eager. Desperate. Running. Addicted.
Alone.
I also remembered that he hadnâ ™ € t been driving the truck that killed my grandmother. He hadnâ ™ € t been lazy doctor willingly prescribed pills for my mother that she needs didn' t. And he hadnâ ™ € t been the only one who abused these pills and buried his head in the sand of depression.
Dad hadn' t been the one who refused to observe the sun was still rising, though it wasn' t.
Even weâ ™ € ve grown apart, I still want the best for him.
It was nice to think that.
I hadn' t allowed me to consider other alternatives. I was sure his father had been killed in the storm or its aftermath and his body was waiting for a place to be identified and claimed.
But what if he hadnâ ™ € t were killed? And if my father was inaccessible in Houston or Baton Rouge or some other distant city in the world? What if he' d boarded a bus and chose to start again when the object it off?
And if he wanted it? And if he wanted me to meet him and forgive him and write a song with him?
I pushed this strange notion aside long enough to draw Jordan and ask him to meet me at six o' clock for dinner at our favorite Thai restaurant a few blocks from my building.
She came in time, as always, and slid into the chair facing me.
"This seat taken? <br> ""I' m € going.I <br> She smiled and took my hand in hers.
"Alone? You' re right? " <br> I smiled. "€ œYes.â <br> ***
My mother and father were native Texans and high school sweethearts. Dad had been "going with Moma €'s biology lab partner, Becky Ravenscroft, and every day we ate lunch together in stool hard drive attached to the last orange rectangular frame on the back of the cafeteria.
In an afternoon of Thursday commonplace, the father was eating a sandwich on Wonder Bread and fluffernutter talking to Becky, when she saw my mother slipping out the back door of the diner. She was carrying nothing but a brown paper bag.
Dad had never seen this girl before. "Oesha moved in slow motion, "he described. "Her hair was so well-coifed. Flood so impeccably applied. Her teeth so pearly White. € <br> Dad said she left the crowd, like the Red Sea, and walked toward him, scanning left and right to a seat. As she saw the father, the school's all-state tight end screamed and waved at Becky from three tables away.
"Becky Ravenscroft! Are you good at geometry? " <br> Becky got up and ran to the "athlete' s table."<br> Mother, oblivious, saw only a solitary young man sitting at the table past the cafeteria. She approached the boy who would one day marry. "Mind if I sit here? ""<br> œSure, "said the father.
"You mind? <br> ""No! I mean no, I don' t mind. Of course you can sit back here.I Given €'s hands were so sweaty had to set his sandwich down and wipe his hands on his jeans under the table.
He sat down and began to pull her out a lunch item timea € "Fritos with a plastic bag, plastic bag with four pieces of celery, plastic bag with a sandwich fluffernutter.
Dad said he knew then he' d spend the rest of your life, your stocking pantry with marshmallow cream and peanut butter. Within a week, the father finally had a great new girlfriend that he deserved, and Becky had to find a new partner laboratory. The new couple is inseparable for the remainder of his junior year and right through high school graduation.
They stayed together, even when the father was ready to sprint to first base past, but my mother wanted to save themselves for marriage, because she' d promised his mother on her sweet sixteenth she would. Dad strongly suggested that wear more modest. Mom suggested that cold showers.
When the mother wanted to go to SMU instead of Texas A & M, his father changed his plans and followed.
When my father had a dream during his first year, one day he' d design buildings on earth and a temple in heaven, his mother encouraged him to go premed and study architecture.
Not a year later, the mother decided her heart wanted to teach primary school children, instead of doing a doctorate and become a teacher. Father bought him a thermos Snoopy and filled it with daisies.
And then he felt inspired to spend a semester abroad to study architecture in Italy. Mom took a semester off and followed.
Thus, when the father fell on one knee in the shadow of the Tower of Pisa and asked if she' d make your dreams, the answer was easy.
